Our story

Muyenda, led by designer Jean-Andre Pieterse, is a Cape Town based furniture design company bringing together artisans in a unique creative collective.  This collaborative approach leads to outstanding and inventive furniture pieces showcasing a blend of different skills, techniques, and creative outlooks.

Jean-Andre, a down-to-earth soul who grew up on a farm in the Great Karoo of South Africa, draws his inspiration from the very earth he grew up on. The vast expanse of the Karoo gifted him an intimate connection with nature.

As an avid world traveller, Jean-Andre carries imprints of cultures and landscapes from every corner of the globe. His restless spirit has wandered through bustling markets, quiet temples, and towering cities. These journeys have not just been about places, but about soaking in the stories and experiences of the people he encountered. His designs are a treasure trove of these cultural dialogues, breathing life into wood and stone.

Muyenda is a celebration of human connection and collaboration. Local artisans from diverse backgrounds join hands, each contributing their unique skills to the symphony of creation. The furniture born from their collective hands is a testament to the power of unity and shared vision.

Inspiration is drawn from ancient architectural marvels and modern wonders alike. The curves of a stool might echo the graceful arches of a distant cathedral, while the clean lines of a table pay homage to the sleek minimalism of contemporary structures. Smooth textures and rough surfaces coexist in harmonious juxtaposition. Each piece speaks of the duality of life - the rugged yet beautiful, the imperfect yet perfect.

These contrasts are not contradictions; they are the heartbeats of a narrative that Muyenda breathes into their craft. But perhaps, the most enduring source of inspiration is the land they call home - South Africa. Its vibrant culture, diverse people, and breathtaking landscapes infuse each piece with a sense of place. The company pays tribute to South African heritage and its role in shaping their creative journey.
